When we toured The Vermont Compost Company farm, Karl Hammer started our tour on top of a huge pile of Yellow Birch ramial wood chips. The wintergreen smell was intense! Betula alleghaniensis is the largest of the birches in North America growing up to 100 feet tall, although 50 feet is more common. Best grown in moist, acidic, sandy or rocky, well-drained soils is full sun to part shade. Sensitive to drought and heat.
