Sambucus canadensis / 'York' Elderberry

Elderberry explodes with white flowers in June which turn into the small black berries you see here. Known for its immune boosting qualities, Sambucus canadensis is used to make a diverse array of treats and remedies including elderflower champagne, elderberry wine, and elderberry syrup. Native to eastern North America, it’s often found in wetter areas such as stream banks, but will tolerate a broad range of soil conditions. Though Elderberries tend to be large shrubs growing around 10 feet tall, 'York' is more compact and stays around 5 feet. Despite is smaller stature, it is a reliable, abundant producer.
