Curcuma longa / Turmeric

Turmeric is well known as an integral spice in Indian cooking and as a medicinal herb for supporting the gut and immune system. Though turmeric grows naturally in the tropics of India, there are ways to grow it in colder climates. In the fall, you can dig up the rhizomes, remove the foliage, and store it in a cool, moist medium. Or keep it in a pot indoors in a cool, dry place. Alternatively, just grow it as an annual. Whichever method you choose, growing turmeric is an exciting project and the leaves provide a tropical look to the garden. Turmeric thrives in moist to wet conditions and full sun to partial shade.
