Ficus carica / 'Chicago Hardy' Fig
Ficus carica / 'Chicago Hardy' Fig
Hardy figs are trending in this area for good reason. The flavor of a fresh fig is unparalleled, and with a little care you can keep a fig plant alive and happy in our zone, producing reliably for years to come.
Though they are called 'hardy', the above-ground growth is usually not able to withstand our Zone 6 winters in Beacon. However, if planted in the ground and mulched before winter, the roots can survive and send up new, fruit producing shoots the next year. You can also keep them in a large container and bring it inside over the winter.
Put your fig somewhere it gets plenty of sunlight and rich soil.
