Lonicera caerulea / 'Aurora' Honeyberry
Lonicera caerulea / 'Aurora' Honeyberry
Lonicera caerulea is an uncommon fruit that should be more widely grown. Also known as Haskaps, the fruits are like oblong blueberries, but are a little more tart unless you let them ripen almost too far, then the sweetness comes out. The best thing about them is that they fruit early - before strawberries, in mid to late May, at a time when we’re all craving some fresh backyard fruit.
Grow in full sun in average, well-drained garden soil. Grows 4-6 feet tall with a 2-4 foot spread.
The 'Aurora' cultivar will cross-pollinate with our other Lonicera cultivar 'Tundra' — in fact, it must have another variety to create fruit!
