Piper methysticum / Kava
A tropical plant that grows naturally in the South Pacific Islands, Kava is a popular drink among the native island populations and has recently become more well-known in the West. Its traditional use includes for ceremonial purposes or in celebration of community and friends, in which the drink is said to promote relaxation. Kava has shiny, heart shaped leaves with distinct venation. In order to grow this tropical plant in the cold northeast US, keep it in a pot and overwinter indoors from fall to spring.
