Sambucus nigra 'Thundercloud' / Elderberry

This large, upright, multi stemmed deciduous shrub grows 6-12’ tall and almost as wide showing rich burgundy foliage against reddish/pink flowers in June which turn into small black berries in late summer-fall. Known for its immune boosting qualities, Sambucus is used to make a diverse array of treats and remedies including elderflower champagne, elderberry wine, and elderberry syrup. It grows well in full sun and wetter, well draining areas such as stream banks, but will tolerate a broad range of soil conditions. Tolerates zone 5. Prune old growth in late winter to maintain size.
