Sarracenia purpurea / Purple Pitcher Plant
Purple Pitcherplant is, in simple terms, a very cool plant. The “pitcher” is actually a modified leaf that lures insects to a cavern of digestive enzymes by producing sweet nectar on the upper rim. The unsuspecting victim slowly falls into the pitcher where it meets its demise. This carnivorous plant requires bog conditions, meaning acidic, humusy, high in peat moss and always moist. Full sun exposure is also a must. If you don’t have the capacity for a bog in your garden, many have success with growing it in a container with no drainage holes.
