Apios americana / Groundnut

Edible nutty-potato flavored tubers, pink orchid-esque flowers on an herbaceous vine that can grow up to 6 meters long, a nitrogen-fixing member of the legume family, a North American native. How can you avoid trying Apios ameicana?! Vines are great for small spaces as they take advantage of vertical space. Grow this one on a fence or a trellis in part shade to full sun and moist soils. We’ve got it planted by our rain barrels so it can climb them and shade the water from the hot summer sun.
