Asclepias tuberosa / Butterflyweed
Asclepias tuberosa / Butterflyweed
In the same genus as the milkweeds. This squatty perennial makes brilliant orange flowers, later tube shaped pods (like small upside down catalpa pods), and the result are tiny seeds carried by wind on the backs of fibrous wings. Poisonous in large amounts, its roots can be powdered and used in small quantities to support respiratory health. Loves dry, well drained soils, roadsides, and sun.
