The unique qualities of Baptisia australis / Wild Indigo make it an ideal plant to add to most if not all urban/suburban gardens. Not only does Baptisia australis feature beautiful flowers in May and June which attract butterflies. It’s also a nitrogen-fixing, meaning it - with the help of certain microbes in the soil - can take the nitrogen from the air and pull it down into the root zone where it can feed the plant and surrounding plants. Another helpful quality especially for urban/suburban habitats that can have low sun exposure is Baptisia’s ability to grow in part shade as well as full sun. This plant also tolerate drought and poor soils. It grows 3 to 4 feet high and 3 to 4 feet wide. Baptisia austrialis is begging to planted in your garden!
