Betula nigra / River Birch

Betula nigra trees have distinct salmon to redish brown papery, peeling bark, often in multi-trunk form. They grow up to 70 feet tall with a 40 to 60 foot spread and prefer wet acidic soils and full sun to part shade. River Birch, aka Black Birch, is the most heat-tolerant of the birches, which may give it a leg up in our warming climate.
