Carpinus caroliniana / American Hornbeam

If you’re looking for a small, shade-tolerant tree, look no further. American hornbeam is easily grown in average soil with part or full shade. Its other common name, musclewood, refers to its striking bark that resembles the grooves of muscles. Striking fall color ranges from yellows to reds. Though slow growing, this tree is well worth the wait.
