Corylus americana / American Hazelnut
Couldn't load pickup availability
For those of us interested in utilizing our yards and local landscapes for growing food, Corylus americana is a must-plant. Nuts are one of the most nutrient-dense plant foods, high in fat, protein, and vitamins and minerals, and American Hazelnuts are your fastest means of getting a nut yield. They are relatively quick to bear nuts - 2 to 3 years after planting, rather than 5 or more years for larger tree nuts. Squirrels and birds will strongly compete with you for a harvest. So you must protect your Hazelnuts, or just accept that you’re providing nutritious food for our wildlife friends. Plant two or more for best pollination. Grows 10 to 16 feet tall with an 8 to 13 foot spread. Plant in full sun to part shade, in soils of average moisture.
