Hay-scented fern is a versatile plant for the shade garden, tolerating various soils from moist and rich to rocky (once established). In rich soils it will spread quickly by rhizomes to fill an area. It grows 1-2’ high, so it can function as a tall ground cover. The common name refers to its aromatic hay smell.
