Diervilla lonicera / Northern Bush Honeysuckle

The Northern Bush Honeysuckle (Diervilla lonicera) is a versatile, deciduous shrub native to North America, perfect for hedgerows, mass plantings, or shrub borders. It grows to 1 to 3 feet in height and width, forming dense thickets. Its dark green leaves turn vibrant yellow-orange to red and purple in autumn, with the most dramatic colors appearing in full sun.

In autumn and winter, its fruit capsules provide food for songbirds. This drought-tolerant shrub adapts well to poor, rocky soils and differs from invasive honeysuckles, which have hollow stems, by its solid stems.

Diervilla lonicera has "perfect flowers" with both male and female parts. For effective fruiting, planting two to three specimens is recommended.
