Hamamelis virginiana / Witch hazel
Witch Hazel wakes up after the rest of the forest goes to sleep. While most trees are entering a dormant phase, the hearty and well adapted Witch Hazel tree blooms in October and November, depending on geography. After leaves drop and fall color has ended, the fragrant yellow long petaled flowers of Hammemelis virginiana brighten the landscape. Witch Hazel is a low maintenance, lower growing understory tree that reaches heights of approx. 20 feet at maturity. It takes on a low canopy shape that requires little pruning, and will delight the senses while other trees are losing their color and resting for the winter. Plant in full sun in rich soils with medium moisture.
