Ilex opaca / American Holly (female)

Few plants are as reminiscent of the holidays as hollies - their dark, evergreen leaves contrast with complimentary bright red berries that ripen in the fall. Their branches are a popular ingredient in wreaths and other holiday decorations. American Holly is a slow-growing, small tree with a pyramidal form and large, sharply serrated leaves. It prefers full sun to part shade with average, well-draining soil. Too much shade will cause it to leaf out more sparsely. As with all Hollies, you need a male and a female for pollination and to get berries.
