Juglans cinerea / Butternut
Couldn't load pickup availability
Butternut is a medium sized native tree closely related to black walnut but is far less common and doesn't release the chemical juglone that is toxic to neighboring plants. The wood is often used for making cabinets and the nuts are edible too. The large fruit is generally better tasting than black walnut and can be used to make oil or eaten fresh. Even the husks can be used; they make a great yellow-orange dye! Plant Butternut in full sun with average soil (moist and rich soils are best). Although it self pollinates, it will bear more fruit if you plant a second tree.
