Liquidambar styraciflua / Sweetgum
Liquidambar styraciflua / Sweetgum
A handsome native tree with bold fall color, striking, star-shaped leaves, and charismatic fruit that resemble an urchin. Many native bird species such as the American goldfinch love the seeds within the fruit. The common name refers to the tasty sap that can be harvested for poultices, chewing gum, and more. The wood is also valued for timber. Has some drought tolerance once established and also tolerates clay. Sweetgum is typically planted as a specimen tree, growing 60-80 feet tall and 40-50 feet wide.
