Sambucus racemosa / Red Elderberry

A large, prolific shrub growing about 12 feet tall and almost as wide, elderberry explodes with white flowers in June which turn into the small red berries. Known for its immune boosting qualities, Sambucus is used to make a diverse array of treats and remedies including elderberry wine, jellies, and baked goods (berries MUST be cooked/processed before consuming). It’s often found in wetter areas such as stream banks, but will tolerate a broad range of soil conditions. Excellent restoration plant with high wildlife value.
