Scutellaria serrata / Showy Skullcap

Skullcap is a plant beloved by herbalists and native plant enthusiasts alike! This "showy" species is a shorter, more shade-tolerant sibling of Skullcap, with slightly larger blue/purple flowers that bloom during May and June. Once the blooms begin to fade however, the leaf margins of this species turn a rich purple, offering gorgeous contrast to the rest of the green leaf during the late summer and fall. There are very few populations remaining in New York and S. serrata is considered endangered here-- all the more reason to add it to your landscape!
