Sorghastrum nutans / Indian Grass
Sometimes overlooked, tall grasses make excellent additions to your landscape. They provide important bird and insect habitat and look great in the wintertime when we need reminders of the far off growing season. Sorghastrum nutans was one of the dominant grasses in the Great Plains prairie ecosystem, feeding huge herds of herbivores and building rich soils. Indian Grass prefers full sun, and dry to medium moisture. Does well in poor, dry, infertile soils. Grows 3 to 5 feet tall with a 1 to 2 foot spread.
