Tilia americana / Basswood
American Linden is one of those magical combinations of being native, ornamentally valuable, and an important source of raw materials. The many uses of this tree include: edible flowers that can be sprinkled on salads and used medicinally, young leaves for salad greens, inner bark for cordage, and good carving wood.
Basswood looks most impressive when planted in an open space, so its crown can fill out to its full potential, reaching heights of 60 to 80 feet. Its fall color is a bright yellow. If you have the space for a large tree, we highly recommend Basswood! Grows best in full sun to part shade with moist soil high in organic matter.
