Urtica dioica / Stinging Nettle
Urtica dioica / Stinging Nettle
Urtica dioica, aptly known as Stinging Nettle, is a perennial herb that grows nearly worldwide. It can reach between 2 and 4 feet high and will grow in dense patches. The leaves are heart shaped, serrated, and taper at the end. Flowers are yellow to pink and bloom in the summer. The entire plant is covered in tiny hairs that release stinging chemicals when touched, giving it its common name. Even so, medicinal herbalists use it for many purposes, including as a diuretic and to ease joint pain. When prepared it can be a tasty, cooked vegetable. The stem fibers can be used for cordage.
